Common Psychological Disorders in Healthcare: Anxiety
Anxiety is one of the most common psychological experiences encountered in everyday life and healthcare settings. It is an emotional state characterised by excessive worry, fear, nervousness, or restlessness, often associated with the anticipation of a possible threat or uncertain future event. Mild anxiety is normal and may improve performance, but persistent or excessive anxiety can interfere with daily activities and indicate an anxiety disorder.
Symptoms of Anxiety
The symptoms of anxiety can be classified into four categories:
Psychological Symptoms: Excessive worry, fear, nervousness, irritability, and restlessness.
Physical Symptoms: Increased heart rate, sweating, trembling, rapid breathing, muscle tension, dizziness, and sleep disturbances.
Cognitive Symptoms: Negative thoughts, difficulty concentrating, indecisiveness, and persistent worry about future events.
Behavioural Symptoms: Avoiding anxiety-provoking situations, repeatedly seeking reassurance, and withdrawing from social activities.
Causes of Anxiety
Anxiety may develop due to a combination of biological, psychological, and environmental factors. Biological factors include genetic predisposition, changes in neurotransmitter activity, and certain medical conditions. Psychological factors include negative thinking, low self-confidence, traumatic experiences, and fear of failure. Environmental factors include academic pressure, financial difficulties, family conflicts, work-related stress, and social isolation.
Types of Anxiety Disorders
Common anxiety disorders include Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), Panic Disorder, specific phobias, Social Anxiety Disorder, and Separation Anxiety Disorder. These conditions differ in their triggers and symptoms but may significantly affect an individual's quality of life.
Management of Anxiety
Anxiety management may involve Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), relaxation techniques, breathing exercises, stress management, regular physical activity, adequate sleep, and a balanced diet. Severe or persistent anxiety may require professional psychological assessment and medication prescribed by a qualified healthcare professional.
Role of the Pharmacist
Pharmacists play an important role in anxiety management through medication counselling, monitoring adverse effects and drug interactions, promoting medication adherence, preventing unsafe self-medication, maintaining confidentiality, and referring patients for appropriate medical care.
Conclusion: Early recognition, appropriate treatment, and compassionate healthcare support can help individuals manage anxiety effectively and improve their overall well-being.
