PSYCHOLOGICAL FACTORS AFFECTING ILLNESS PERCEPTION AND RECOVERY
Unit 2: Developmental and Behavioral Psychology
Subject: Healthcare Psychology
Introduction
Psychological factors influence how individuals perceive illness, respond to symptoms, follow treatment, cope with health problems, and recover. These factors affect patients’ emotions, motivation, health-related decisions, and treatment adherence.
Major Psychological Factors
Illness Perception: Illness perception refers to how a person understands and interprets an illness, including its causes, symptoms, duration, and consequences. A positive and realistic perception encourages appropriate treatment, whereas misconceptions may cause fear or delay treatment.
Emotions: Emotions such as fear, anxiety, sadness, and anger can influence illness perception and recovery. Excessive anxiety may increase the perception of pain, while emotional support and a positive outlook can improve coping.
Stress: Stress can affect immunity, sleep, and general well-being. Prolonged stress may worsen certain health conditions and delay recovery. Relaxation techniques and stress management can support healing.
Personality: Personality influences how individuals respond to illness. Optimistic and resilient individuals may cope better with health problems, whereas excessive pessimism may reduce motivation to follow treatment.
Beliefs and Attitudes: Personal beliefs, cultural values, and previous experiences influence attitudes towards illness and medicines. Incorrect beliefs about medicines may lead to non-adherence, while appropriate health education promotes rational treatment decisions.
Motivation and Treatment Adherence: Motivation encourages patients to follow medical advice, take medicines correctly, and adopt healthy lifestyles. Poor motivation or fear of adverse effects may lead to discontinuation of treatment.
Social Support: Family, friends, and healthcare professionals provide emotional and practical support. Social support reduces stress, improves confidence, and encourages treatment adherence.
Coping and Resilience: Coping strategies help individuals manage illness-related challenges. Resilient patients adapt to difficulties, maintain hope, and actively participate in recovery.
